Colorado gives nurse practitioners a real path to independence — but only after you've cleared the RXN mentorship gate.
Before a Colorado APRN can prescribe independently, the state requires a provisional prescriptive authority (RXN-P) period: at least 750 hours of documented mentorship from a physician or another fully-authorized APRN, plus a written Articulated Plan of Safe Prescribing. Skip a step, miss a log, or sign with the wrong mentor, and your application to the Colorado Board of Nursing gets bounced.
The real challenge isn't the rule itself. It's finding a qualified mentor, structuring a defensible agreement, documenting every hour, and not overpaying for the privilege. This guide covers all of it.

Frequently, I address complex cases that necessitate coordination among multiple specialties, including those related to traumatic brain injury, treatment-resistant depression, and functional impairments. I integrate tools like qEEG, neuroimaging, and structured psychiatric assessments to inform my clinical decision-making. Additionally, I offer ongoing psychotherapy, medication management, family guidance, and consultation in both clinical and legal contexts.

Hello, my name is Philip and I graduated from Florida International University for medical school and the University of South Florida for psychiatry residency. I have experience working at the outpatient PTSD clinic at the Tampa VA as well as inpatient at the largest baker act receiving facility in the Tampa Bay area called Gracepoint. I also have experience covering the psychiatry ER as well as the inpatient units at the Tampa VA. I have also worked for different outpatient psychiatric telemedicine platforms online. Throughout my training and work, I have gained much experience in treating mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, as well as substance use disorders. More recently I have gained a passion for working with NPs which is a major need in the field of mental health. Countless patients have suffered through incredibly long wait times in order to be seen by a mental health provider. As awareness for mental health increases around the nation, the need for more immediate treatment has never been greater and I fully believe that NPs have a very large role to play here. I have over 15 different NPs that I collaborate with at this time. I pride myself in being easy to work with and provide each NP with my direct cell and they can reach out at anytime. Conversations typically start with a quick text and we can schedule a phone call or video meeting from there if needed. The initial meeting is used for introductions and to assess each other's prescribing methods and approach to certain cases. I understand that supervision may not be needed for standard non-complicated cases and respect each NPs freedom to run their practice as they see fit. However, I have much experience in treating complicated cases so I urge NPs to never hesitate to reach out at any time, even if it is for a quick question. ADD $100 FOR OHIO AND ALABAMA. The Cost of Getting This Wrong
Before we get into the requirements, let's be direct about what's at stake.
Colorado APRNs who prescribe without a valid RXN, who let their Articulated Plan lapse, or who can't produce mentorship documentation when audited face real consequences:
License discipline from the Colorado Board of Nursing — suspension, probation, or revocation
DEA registration loss — automatic when state prescriptive authority is suspended
Insurance panel removal — Medicaid and major commercial payors drop providers under active discipline
Personal liability exposure — malpractice carriers can deny coverage for prescriptions written outside authority
Delayed transition to full RXN — incomplete documentation forces NPs to restart the 750-hour clock
It's not a paperwork problem. It's a licensing problem. A license suspension doesn't just pause your practice. It can end it.
The Articulated Plan of Safe Prescribing: What It Must Include
Colorado's Articulated Plan is the document that defines your provisional prescribing relationship. It must include:
Identification of the NP and the mentor physician (or full-RXN APRN), with license numbers
Scope of prescribing — therapeutic categories, controlled substances tier, populations served
Mentorship structure — frequency of meetings, chart-review methodology, on-call availability
Quality assurance plan — how prescribing decisions are evaluated and corrected
Documentation protocol — how the 750 hours will be logged and verified
Termination clause — how either party exits the agreement
The plan is kept on file with the Colorado Board of Nursing and must be updated whenever scope, mentor, or practice setting changes. Most NPs renew or revise annually.
Controlled Substances: What Colorado NPs Can and Cannot Prescribe
Once you hold a full RXN with a DEA registration, Colorado APRNs may prescribe Schedules II–V controlled substances within their population focus. During the provisional (RXN-P) period, Schedule II prescribing is restricted and must be specifically authorized within the Articulated Plan.
Additional requirements:
DEA registration — separate federal registration; Colorado state controlled substance license issued by DORA
Colorado PDMP (Prescription Drug Monitoring Program) query is mandatory before initial opioid or benzodiazepine prescription and at every refill milestone
Opioid prescribing limits apply: initial acute opioid prescriptions are capped at a 7-day supply for opioid-naïve patients (with exceptions)
e-Prescribing of controlled substances is required statewide
Physician Ratio Limits and Geographic Flexibility
The Ratio Cap
Colorado does not impose a statutory cap on the number of NPs a single mentor physician may supervise during the RXN-P period. However, the Board of Nursing expects each mentorship relationship to be substantive — a physician overseeing dozens of NPs invites scrutiny.
No Geographic Distance Requirement
Colorado does not require the mentor and NP to share a physical location. Mentorship can be conducted via telehealth, video conference, or asynchronous chart review — provided the mentor is reachable when clinical questions arise. Not physically present, but reachable by phone or electronic communication.
This flexibility is one reason platforms like NP Collaborator can match Colorado NPs with mentors statewide.
Ongoing Compliance: Chart Reviews, Meetings, and Documentation
Signing an Articulated Plan is the starting line, not the finish line.
Chart Reviews
Colorado does not set a fixed percentage, but most defensible Articulated Plans specify 10%–20% of charts reviewed monthly during the RXN-P period, weighted toward controlled-substance prescribing and high-risk diagnoses. Each review must be documented with:
Date of review and reviewer signature
Patient identifier (de-identified for storage)
Findings and any corrective feedback
NP acknowledgment
Monthly Mentorship Meetings
At least one documented meeting per month during the 750-hour RXN-P period. Meetings may be virtual. Document:
Date, duration, attendees
Cases discussed
Clinical guidance provided
Action items and follow-up
Continuous Availability
Your mentor must be reachable during your patient-care hours — by phone, secure message, or video. Not physically present, but reachable by phone or electronic communication.
Annual Plan Renewal
A lapse in your Articulated Plan means a lapse in your prescribing authority. Set a calendar reminder 60 days before expiration.
Telemedicine Collaborations in Colorado
Colorado permits telehealth-based mentorship and collaborative practice. Considerations:
The mentor must hold an active Colorado medical license (or be a Colorado-licensed full-RXN APRN)
The NP must hold a Colorado APRN license; the Nurse Licensure Compact does not cover prescriptive authority
Out-of-state telehealth prescribing requires licensure in the patient's state
Controlled-substance telehealth prescribing must comply with the federal Ryan Haight Act and DEA telemedicine rules
The NP Collaborator network includes Colorado-licensed physicians experienced in telemedicine mentorship.
What Does a Collaborating Physician Cost in Colorado?
This is the question every Colorado NP asks — and the answer varies more than most people expect.
Market rates for Colorado mentorship and collaborative agreements range from $500 to $1,400 per month, with an average around $875/month. Cost drivers:
Specialty complexity — Psychiatry and aesthetics command higher rates
Controlled substance authorization — Schedule II oversight adds 20–35%
Patient volume — High-volume practices increase chart-review workload
Telemedicine scope — Multi-state telehealth raises liability exposure
Mentor credentials — Board-certified specialists charge a premium

Compliance Checklist for Colorado NPs
Before signing any agreement, ask:
✅ Is the mentor actively licensed by the Colorado Medical Board (or a full-RXN APRN)?
✅ Does the Articulated Plan address every required clause?
✅ Is the chart-review methodology documented and realistic?
✅ Are monthly meetings scheduled and logged?
✅ Is malpractice coverage in place and verifiable?
✅ Is there a written termination clause?
Finding a physician who is licensed and available is the floor, not the ceiling.
