No CPA required for Wyoming NPs — but you need a biennial Controlled Substance Registration, mandatory PMP AWARxE PDMP queries, and 3 hours of CS-specific CE every 2 years. Full 2026 compliance guide for Wyoming APRNs with voluntary collaboration pricing.
Wyoming offers NPs one of the cleanest independent practice environments in the country: no collaborative practice agreement, no supervised hours, no physician oversight structure of any kind. What governs your practice is a straightforward three-part credential requirement — your APRN license, a Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration renewed biennially through the Board of Pharmacy, and a federal DEA registration. Beyond credentials, Wyoming requires three hours of CE specific to controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment every two years, and mandatory use of the state PDMP, PMP AWARxE, before prescribing controlled substances. The compliance structure is lean. But each of these requirements is independently enforced, and the biennial CS registration renewal is the one most likely to lapse unnoticed. This guide covers everything Wyoming NPs need to stay current, stay compliant, and practice with confidence — and when voluntary physician partnerships still make sense despite legal independence.

As awareness for mental health increases around the nation, the need for more immediate treatment has never been greater and I fully believe that NPs have a very large role to play here. I have over 15 different NPs that I collaborate with at this time. I pride myself in being easy to work with and provide each NP with my direct cell and they can reach out at anytime. Conversations typically start with a quick text and we can schedule a phone call or video meeting from there if needed. The initial meeting is used for introductions and to assess each other's prescribing methods and approach to certain cases. I understand that supervision may not be needed for standard non-complicated cases and respect each NPs freedom to run their practice as they see fit. However, I have much experience in treating complicated cases so I urge NPs to never hesitate to reach out at any time, even if it is for a quick question. ADD $100 FOR OHIO AND ALABAMA. The Cost of Getting This Wrong
Wyoming's lean compliance structure means there are fewer moving parts — but each one matters independently. These are the highest-risk failure points for Wyoming NPs:
Letting the State CS Registration lapse. Wyoming's Controlled Substance Registration is a biennial credential issued by the Board of Pharmacy. It is a separate authorization from both your APRN license and your DEA number. Prescribing any Schedule II–V controlled substance with a lapsed state CS registration is a regulatory violation regardless of whether your APRN license and DEA number are current. Wyoming does not automatically link these renewal cycles, so a lapsed CS registration can go unnoticed until a complaint or audit surfaces it. Set separate calendar reminders at least 60 days before your CS registration renewal date — do not assume it renews with your APRN license.
Missing the 3-hour CS-specific CE requirement. Wyoming requires three hours of CE specifically focused on controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment every two years. This is a separately tracked requirement — not a general CE credit that satisfies the condition. NPs who complete broad pharmacology or clinical CE courses may inadvertently let this three-hour specific requirement go unfulfilled if they do not track it as a distinct category. The Wyoming State Board of Nursing enforces this CE standard at APRN license renewal. Failing to complete it can delay renewal or trigger a compliance review.
Failing to query PMP AWARxE before prescribing controlled substances. Under Wyoming Statute § 35-7-1060, practitioners must query PMP AWARxE before prescribing controlled substances. This is a legal requirement, not a clinical best practice recommendation. A missed PDMP query that contributes to a harmful prescribing outcome can result in Board of Nursing discipline, civil liability, and DEA action simultaneously. Document every PMP AWARxE query in the patient's medical record with date, time, and findings.
Full Practice Authority: What It Means (And What It Doesn't)
What Wyoming law permits. Under Wyoming Statute § 33-21-120 and regulations of the Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN), NPs are authorized to practice to the full extent of their APRN role and population certification without physician oversight, supervision, or collaboration mandates of any kind, which matters directly for compliant licensure, prescribing, and patient care. Wyoming follows the APRN Consensus Model of Regulation and recognizes advanced practice registered nurses under a full-practice framework. You may independently evaluate and diagnose patients, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications including Schedule II–V controlled substances, and open and operate independent practices without any board-filed agreement, physician co-signature, or oversight structure.
What governs your practice. In the absence of a physician oversight framework, your practice is governed by your WSBN APRN license, your national certification in your role and population focus (ANCC, AANP, or equivalent), your state and federal controlled substance registrations, and the clinical standards of your specialty. These replace the physician-oversight structure entirely, because Wyoming does not impose the supervision requirements seen elsewhere.
CPA Content Requirements
Wyoming has no collaborative practice agreement requirement under state law. You do not need physician oversight to practice, prescribe, or manage patients independently. For NPs who pursue voluntary physician collaboration — for credentialing, institutional, or specialty reasons — a well-structured agreement should include:
Identities and Credentials — Full legal names, Wyoming APRN license numbers, Wyoming State CS Registration numbers, DEA registration numbers, national certification details, and specialty designations
Scope of Arrangement — Clear definition of the clinical scope covered and the nature of the collaboration (consultative, credentialing-based, specialty-specific, or institutional)
Consultation Protocols — How and when the NP will contact the physician, expected response times, and escalation procedures for urgent clinical situations
DEA and Controlled Substance Acknowledgment — Confirmation that the NP holds both a current Wyoming State CS Registration and a federal DEA registration, and has completed the federal 8-hour MATE Act training and the biennial 3-hour Wyoming CS-specific CE
Quality Assurance Processes — Chart review schedules and outcome benchmarks; important for credentialing bodies even when not state-mandated
Term and Termination — Start date, renewal terms, and a minimum 30–60 day notice period for either party
Signatures and Dating — Original dated signatures from both parties
Controlled Substance & Prescriptive Authority Rules
Wyoming NPs with a valid state CS Registration hold full, independent authority to prescribe Schedule II–V controlled substances, with no collaborative practice agreement requirement under state law and no separate collaborative agreement needed for that authority. The required credential stack:
State Controlled Substance Registration — Issued by the Wyoming Board of Pharmacy, this is a biennial credential separate from both your APRN license and your DEA number. All practitioners who prescribe controlled substances in Wyoming must hold a valid state CS Registration. Renewal is biennial and operates on its own cycle — it does not automatically align with your APRN license renewal or your DEA renewal. Applications and renewals are processed through the Wyoming Board of Pharmacy portal. Fee is approximately $50–$100 per biennial cycle. Set separate calendar reminders at least 60 days before expiration — a lapsed CS registration blocks your controlled substance prescribing authority regardless of your other credentials.
Federal DEA Registration — Apply through deadiversion.usdoj.gov. Allow 4–6 weeks for new applications. Renews every three years at $888. Address-specific — update with any practice location change. Multi-state practitioners may require additional state-specific DEA registrations.
Federal 8-Hour MATE Act Training — Required once for all DEA registrants. Must be affirmed at DEA registration or renewal. Covers treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Exemptions exist for board-certified addiction medicine and psychiatry specialists, and for recent NP graduates whose accredited programs covered equivalent content within the last five years — but you must confirm your exemption status; it is not assumed.
3-Hour CS-Specific CE (Wyoming State Requirement) — Three hours of CE focused on controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment, every two years. This is tracked as a distinct CE category for WSBN renewal compliance within broader healthcare credential maintenance. General pharmacology or clinical CE does not satisfy this requirement unless the content specifically addresses controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment. Confirm approved course formats with the WSBN before counting credits toward this category, and keep records of the continuing education you use for renewal. If a course is tied to prescribing authority or pharmacology, review whether the Board describes the underlying education in credit measures such as semester hours. This is separate from and cumulative with the federal MATE Act training.
Physician Ratio & Geography
Wyoming imposes no ratio caps on voluntary collaborative arrangements. A physician can support any number of NPs simultaneously, and the state sets no ceiling. Ask any prospective collaborating physician directly how many NPs they currently work with — a physician with 25+ arrangements may not have adequate bandwidth for meaningful consultation.
No geographic proximity requirements exist. Your collaborating physician can be located anywhere in Wyoming — or outside Wyoming for telehealth-based consultation arrangements. Remote consultation via teleconference is fully permissible — a meaningful advantage for NPs in frontier Wyoming counties, the Big Horn Basin, or the Powder River Basin where physician density is thin.
Wyoming's significant rural and frontier geography makes full practice authority particularly important — NPs can establish practices in medically underserved areas without any oversight structure or physician proximity requirement.
Ongoing Compliance
Wyoming APRN license — Renew per WSBN renewal schedule (track separately from CS registration); monitor the Board’s administrative rules and any advisory opinions that affect licensure or scope
Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration — Renew biennially through Board of Pharmacy (separate renewal cycle from APRN license; set separate reminders); remember each regulatory agency may update its own forms and deadlines
Federal DEA registration — Renews every three years; address-specific; set renewal reminders at least 60 days before expiration
3-hour CS-specific CE — Every two years; must be focused on controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment; track as a distinct CE category and keep completion records with your other documents
Federal 8-hour MATE Act training — One-time requirement; confirm exemption status if applicable; affirm during DEA registration or renewal
PMP AWARxE queries — Before prescribing controlled substances per W.S. § 35-7-1060; document every query in patient records
Telemedicine
Wyoming permits telehealth practice for licensed APRNs under Wyoming Statute § 33-26-102. NPs may provide telehealth services to patients located in Wyoming under their WSBN APRN license. For out-of-state providers treating Wyoming patients, Wyoming licensure is generally required.
Federal DEA telehealth flexibilities — The DEA's fourth temporary extension of pandemic-era telehealth flexibilities extends through December 31, 2026, permitting controlled substance prescribing via telehealth without a prior in-person evaluation. Confirm the status of these flexibilities at or after December 31, 2026 — this federal rule is scheduled to expire, and any continuation or permanent rule will govern Wyoming telehealth prescribing.
Wyoming requirements apply to telehealth — State CS Registration, PMP AWARxE queries, electronic prescribing requirements, and MATE Act training all apply equally to telehealth-generated prescriptions. Query PMP AWARxE before any controlled substance prescription regardless of whether the encounter is in-person or remote.
Pricing & Market Analysis
Wyoming law does not require physician collaboration, so there is no state-mandated collaboration market. Those who pursue voluntary collaboration — for credentialing, specialty, or institutional reasons — face varying costs depending on the specialty and scope of involvement. Market data for voluntary arrangements in full practice states is thinner than in reduced practice states, where agreements are required in several states, but available pricing for similar full practice environments suggests these ranges:
Specialty | Estimated Market Range (Monthly) | NPCollaborator (Monthly) |
|---|---|---|
Primary Care / Family Practice | $200 – $400 | From $150 |
Psychiatric / Mental Health | $300 – $500 | From $225 |
Aesthetics / Med Spa | $250 – $450 | From $175 |
Pain Management | $350 – $550 | From $275 |
MAT / Suboxone | $300 – $500 | From $250 |
Urgent Care | $200 – $400 | From $150 |
Women's Health | $200 – $400 | From $150 |
Wound Care | $350 – $600 | From $300 |
Platform fees (NPCollaborator and similar) bundle legal documentation, compliance support, and malpractice acknowledgment — verify inclusions before committing. Independent practice startup costs include Wyoming APRN license renewal (approximately $100–$150 per cycle), Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration (approximately $50–$100 biennial), federal DEA registration ($888 for three years), 3-hour CS-specific CE course (typically $75–$200 per cycle), MATE Act training (typically $150–$400 for approved 8-hour courses), and malpractice insurance (approximately $1,500–$4,500 per year depending on specialty and coverage).
How to Find a Collaborating Physician
Wyoming requires no physician collaborator under state law. NPs seeking voluntary consultation relationships most commonly look for:
Physicians in their specialty willing to accept complex case consultations
Mentors for expanding into new clinical areas such as psychiatric-mental health, addiction medicine, or pain management
Hospital privileging support at institutions that prefer demonstrated collaborative relationships for credentialing purposes
Employer or Institution-Based — Large health systems in Cheyenne, Casper, Gillette, and regional hospital networks often facilitate physician collaboration through embedded medical staff relationships. Convenient, but no say in who the physician is, and the arrangement ends with employment.
Professional Network and Peer Outreach — Direct outreach through the Wyoming Nurses Association, specialty societies, or peer referrals. Viable in urban and suburban areas; thinner in frontier counties where the no-geographic-restriction rule gives you statewide access or out-of-state telehealth consultation access.
Matching Platforms (NPCollaborator and similar) — Vetted physician matches with attorney-reviewed agreement templates. Matching timelines in Wyoming average one to two weeks. Platform fees are higher than successful cold outreach but lower than the cumulative cost of a failed search that delays credentialing or billing authorization.
Geographic considerations — Wyoming's large geographic territory and lower population density can make finding a local physician in your specialty challenging. Telehealth-based consultation relationships — where a physician reviews cases remotely or is available for phone or video consultation — are practical in Wyoming's geography and common in the informal advisory market.
Since no legal requirement exists, focus your evaluation on clinical specialty alignment, communication responsiveness, and availability for asynchronous consultation. Structure any arrangement clearly as consultation or mentorship — not supervision — to preserve your full practice authority protections.

FAQ
Do Wyoming NPs need a collaborating physician?
No — state law grants full practice authority with no physician oversight requirement. Voluntary arrangements may still be pursued for credentialing, insurance panel, or specialty reasons.
What is the Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration?
A state-level prescribing authorization issued by the Wyoming Board of Pharmacy, separate from your APRN license and DEA number. It must be renewed biennially on its own cycle. Prescribing controlled substances with a lapsed CS Registration is a regulatory violation regardless of your APRN license or DEA status.
What is the 3-hour CS-specific CE requirement?
Wyoming requires three hours of CE focused on controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment every two years. Track this as a distinct CE category — general pharmacology or clinical CE does not satisfy this requirement unless the content specifically addresses controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment. This is separate from the federal MATE Act training.
What is the difference between the Wyoming 3-hour CE and the federal MATE Act training?
The 3-hour requirement is a Wyoming-specific biennial CE obligation focused on controlled substance prescribing or substance abuse treatment. The 8-hour MATE Act training is a federal one-time requirement for all DEA registrants. Both are required — one does not substitute for the other.
